PORTRAIT OF A PATRON
By Aliyu Kamal
The Patron, in the august person of Haji Yunus Idris, adherent to the new social orientation of Kano, tolerates his neighbour's profligacy until Sadisu Gangan's reprobate of a son succumbs to the HIV/AIDS virus. Heeding their neighbourly relations and the charity upon which those relations are founded, the Patron negotiates the transfer of Sadisu and his family to a safe location away from the jeers of the mocking Kano City public.
Portrait of a Patron comes at a time when Kano turns its back on the decadence of the past and embraces a new programme of reform and social reorientation.
