HSITORY OF THE EMIRATE OF BIDA TO 1899AD
By Sule Mohammed, Ph.D
The book is a penetrating study of the history of the emirate of Bida. Unlike previous studies which focus only on the jihad of Muhammad Bin Fate, alias Dendo, in discussing the emergence of the emirate, this book traces the processes that led to the emergence of the emirate to the jihad activities of Abdurrahman Bin Muhammad Sharif, which started c.1778. Using wide range of primary and secondary sources, the author marshals evidence to show how Abdurrahman's jihad was superseded by that of Dendo. He also shows how the emirate grew phenomenally between 1859 and 1873 to become one of the most prominent of the emirates of the Sokoto Caliphate, with military and economic factors playing key roles. The book is an essential reading for those who want to know how a polity can harness its resources for rapid growth.
