By Aliyu Kamal
A big herd of cattle, a beautiful girl to marry that is the dream of Fillo, a young Fulani herdsman who sets out from Kanwa, northern Nigeria, and travels down to the south in search of the dream. In his journey of adventure, he meets Kado and together they traverse all over the land, meeting amorous Queen Dauzar, murderous King Lamba and sybaritic feuding southern chiefs. The friends take part in the 1899 war waged by King Tudu, the Revivalist, to bring southern Lorin into the northern fold.
HAUSALAND can be read as an adventure story, a historical account of Nigeria's turbulent colonial past or a portrayal of the mythical origins of Fulani riches and southern Nigerian chiefdoms.
